Dental Implants- The Basics

What is a dental implant?
Most basically, a dental implant is a replacement of a tooth down to the roots.
Like a natural tooth, a dental implant is surrounded by and actually infused into the bone of the jaw.

Dental Implants are a process:
Unlike a lot of other dental procedures, dental implants have multiple phases usually performed several weeks apart.

Phase one is the surgical placement of the implant. This can be done under local anesthesia or under IV sedation so you won’t feel any discomfort or pain. The tooth root implant will be installed into your jawbone through an incision made in your gums.

Phase two, a connecting piece that goes over the implant post, will be placed to shape the tissues in the area that will hold your beautiful new tooth!

Once your gums have healed, your dentist will make impressions of your teeth and implant and create a custom replacement tooth called a crown which is attached to the implant through a new final abutment.
