What are wisdom teeth?
The third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. Most adults develop four — one in each corner of the mouth behind the second molars. They are usually the last teeth to develop and can emerge from ages 14-25. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom. Most of the time, there is usually not enough room for these extra molars to grow in without causing problems. Removing these molars early can help prevent infections, cavities to the adjacent teeth, dental shifting, cysts, and even tumors. When there isn’t enough space for the wisdom teeth, they will attempt to grow in whichever direction they can—even sideways. This angled growth can also lead to damage to your existing healthy teeth Most dental professionals recommend having regular checkups to track the location of your wisdom teeth and prevent these problems.
Why have wisdom teeth removed?
While not all wisdom teeth require removal, wisdom teeth extractions are most often performed because of an active problem such as pain, swelling, decay or infection, or as a preventative measure to avoid serious problems in the future. Early wisdom teeth removal can help prevent the following problems:

- Crowding of healthy teeth
- Damage to the adjacent molars

When is the ideal time for wisdom teeth to be removed?
The right age for removal can differ for every person. This is because teeth development can occur at a different rate for everyone. It is recommend that children entering their teen years receive an X-ray evaluation by a dentist, orthodontist, or oral and maxillofacial surgeon to determine the location and condition of the wisdom teeth. In general, early intervention can prevent future discomfort, promote better healing, and make removal and recovery easier.
